We visited the South Island of New Zealand in January 2025 for Chatlotte to take a mountain flying course.
We arranged a private photo tour of the Southern Lakes District and Milford Road (state highway 94), 119 km from Te Anau through spectacular scenery to Milford Sound (Piopiopati) and back to Queenstown through Fiordlands National Park, part of Te Wahipounamu (Southern New Zealand) World Heritage Area, with Remarkable Imagery Photo Tours guide Martin Kohn.
The road passes through southern beech forests.
The hand-hewn Homer Tunnel is one-way, controlled by a traffic light.
Keas (alpine parrots, endemic to South Island) are often found around the parking area before you get to the tunnel.
